In this talk, I'll walk through the process of getting Refinery (Honeycomb's sampling solution) running at GOAT. I'll cover why we needed a sampling solution like Refinery, how we scaled and tuned Refinery to handle a large workload, defined complex sampling rules to ensure we retained interesting traces, and how we safely and responsibly make changes to our Refiney cluster after it is deployed and operational. I'll also cover a few pain points that we're still working to address.

Michael is a Platform Engineer at Honeycomb.io. Has worked with various public and private cloud providers over for the past 8 years. Originally was deeply rooted in system administration but has since gained fondness for infrastructure as code and developer tooling.
